About this design
In the Alhambra, the domes of the Hall of the Two Sisters and the Hall of the Abencerrajes are built of thousands of small carved cells, stepped one above another until they meet at a star. The Arabic name is muqarnas; in Spanish it is often called mocárabe. The Muqarnas Vault brings that honeycomb dome to a flat ceiling.
The Aesthetic
An eight-pointed star sits at the centre. Around it, tier after tier of honeycomb cells radiate outward in perfect mirror symmetry, each cell filled with fine arabesque carving. Painted light and shadow do the work: warm light seems to fall from the centre, the deepest cells drop into umber shade, and a flat ceiling reads as a carved vault you could reach up into. The palette is ivory stucco, sand and honey, deepening to umber and walnut brown. It is a trompe-l'oeil — the depth, the carving and the gilded tones are all printed; the wallpaper itself is flat.
Features
- Design: A Nasrid muqarnas dome seen from directly below — an eight-pointed star medallion ringed by tiers of honeycomb cells with carved arabesque. A new design in the tradition of the Alhambra, not a copy of a historical ceiling.
- Palette: Ivory Stucco, Sand and Honey, with Umber and Walnut Brown in the shadows.
- Format: A single ceiling mural, printed once with the star centred. It is square, so it fits most naturally on a ceiling or recess that is roughly square — for example four panels, 304 cm across, with 305 cm lengths. It also suits tray ceilings, domed recesses, coffers and arched vaults, as in the images.
- Finish: Matte print on a flat surface. The cells, carving, shadows and gold tones are printed; there is no relief, plaster or gold leaf.
- Ceilings: We recommend a professional decorator for any ceiling installation.
- Style: Nasrid Heritage, Islamic Geometric, Trompe-l'oeil Ceiling Mural.
Sizing and Coverage
- Panel width: 30 in (76 cm) — the same on every length.
- Panel lengths: 96 in (244 cm), 108 in (274 cm), 120 in (305 cm) and 144 in (366 cm). On a ceiling, choose the length that covers the span the panels run across; the longest is 366 cm.
- Sample: 30 in × 20 in (76 cm × 51 cm) — a full panel width, posted free worldwide.
- Press Customise your wall above and enter your ceiling size as width × length. It chooses the panel length, counts the panels, shows where the seams will fall and previews the design at your ceiling’s proportions.
Which finish should I choose?
- Peel and Stick — self-adhesive backing. No paste and no water. Repositionable as you hang it and removable later, so it is the usual choice for renters and first-time installers.
- Pre-Pasted — the adhesive is already on the back and is activated with water. Nothing separate to buy or mix.
- Non-Pasted — you apply wallpaper paste to the wall yourself. The traditional method, and the one most decorators prefer for a permanent installation.
