Paisley — Safavid Garden Lattice Wallpaper

A garden you can hang on the wall. Paisley is drawn from Safavid miniature painting and the paradise-garden tradition of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Persia, where the chahar bagh — the walled garden divided by water into four — was imagined as a small picture of paradise.

The Aesthetic

The design is built in layers, the way a miniature painter builds a garden scene. First comes a geometric lattice of eight-pointed stars and cross-shaped bays, drawn in deep navy. Then, inside every bay, a botanical composition of arabesque palmettes, curling tendrils and tulip buds in saffron gold and cobalt blue on a chalk-white ground. From across a room it reads as one ordered, luminous field; step closer and the planting inside each star comes forward. It is at its best on a surface that deserves a single decisive gesture — a curved feature wall, a stair run, or a ceiling framed by coffers or cove lighting.

Which finish should I choose?

• Peel and Stick — self-adhesive backing. No paste and no water. Repositionable as you hang it and removable later, so it is the usual choice for renters and first-time installers.
• Pre-Pasted — the adhesive is already on the back and is activated with water. Nothing separate to buy or mix.
• Non-Pasted — you apply wallpaper paste to the wall yourself. The traditional method, and the one most decorators prefer for a permanent installation.
