About this design
Samarkand was called the Blue City for its tilework. Samarkand Blue is drawn after the Timurid tile mosaics of the late 14th and 15th centuries — the portals of the Shah-i-Zinda and the madrasas of the Registan — where craftsmen cut every colour from a separate glazed tile and fitted the pieces together like a puzzle.
The Aesthetic
One great sunburst medallion sits at the centre, its petals in cobalt, turquoise and saffron. Around it runs a dense field of interlocking stars and rosettes, the girih geometry of Timurid walls, and the whole composition is framed by borders of lotus and palmette scrollwork with star-tile corners, like a portal panel. The palette is the one that made Samarkand famous: deep cobalt and turquoise on white, lit with saffron, terracotta and a touch of leaf green. The look of cut glazed tile, with its fine pale joints, belongs to the printed image; the wallpaper itself is flat, with no glaze, grout or relief. It is drawn as a single mural with the medallion centred, so it suits a wall that can be seen whole — behind a dining table, a sideboard, a console in an entrance hall, or a vanity.
Features
- Design: Timurid tile-mosaic portal with a central sunburst medallion, a girih star field and lotus-and-palmette borders, after the tilework of Samarkand. A new design in that tradition, not a copy of a historical panel.
- Palette: Cobalt, Turquoise and White, with Saffron, Terracotta and Leaf Green.
- Format: A single mural, printed once across the wall with the medallion centred. It is square, so it fits most naturally on a wall about as wide as it is tall — for example four panels, 304 cm wide, at a ceiling height around 3 m.
- Finish: Matte print on a flat surface. The tile, glaze and joints are printed; there is no real tile, gold or raised texture.
- Style: Timurid Heritage, Islamic Geometric, Architectural Mural.
Sizing and Coverage
- Panel width: 30 in (76 cm) — the same on every length.
- Panel lengths: 96 in (244 cm), 108 in (274 cm), 120 in (305 cm) and 144 in (366 cm). We fit the shortest length that covers your wall, so a lower ceiling costs less.
- Sample: 30 in × 20 in (76 cm × 51 cm) — a full panel width, posted free worldwide.
- Press Customise your wall above and enter your wall size. It chooses the panel length, counts the panels, shows where the seams will fall and previews the design at your wall’s proportions.
Which finish should I choose?
- Peel and Stick — self-adhesive backing. No paste and no water. Repositionable as you hang it and removable later, so it is the usual choice for renters and first-time installers.
- Pre-Pasted — the adhesive is already on the back and is activated with water. Nothing separate to buy or mix.
- Non-Pasted — you apply wallpaper paste to the wall yourself. The traditional method, and the one most decorators prefer for a permanent installation.
