A Living Tradition
Carta Noor was founded on a simple but profound belief: that the artistic traditions of the Islamic and Middle Eastern world represent some of the greatest achievements in the history of decorative art — and that these traditions deserve a place in the contemporary home.
Every design in the Carta Noor collection begins with this belief and with a deep engagement with the source material: the architecture, manuscripts, textiles, and objects that have carried these traditions across centuries and continents. Browse our full collection to see the results.
The Sources of Inspiration
Our design process begins with research. We study the great monuments of Islamic architecture — the Alhambra in Granada, the mosques of Istanbul, the palaces of Isfahan, the madrasas of Fez — not to copy them, but to understand the principles that make them beautiful.
What we find, again and again, is that Islamic decorative art is governed by a set of underlying principles: mathematical precision, infinite repetition, the interplay of positive and negative space, and a profound understanding of how pattern creates rhythm, movement, and depth.
These principles are timeless. They work as well on a contemporary wallpaper as they do on a 14th-century tile panel.
Geometric Patterns: Mathematics as Beauty
Many of our designs begin with geometry. Islamic geometric art is built on precise mathematical grids — typically based on the circle, from which all other forms are derived. Stars, hexagons, octagons, and interlocking polygons emerge from these grids with a logic that feels both inevitable and endlessly surprising.
When we develop a geometric design, we work with these same underlying grids, exploring how different configurations of line and form create different visual effects. Arabesque and Floral Motifs: Nature Abstracted
Our floral and arabesque designs draw on the great traditions of Ottoman, Persian, and Andalusian decorative art. The Ottoman tulip, the Persian garden, the Andalusian courtyard — each of these traditions has its own distinctive vocabulary of form and colour, and each has informed our collection.
What we love about the arabesque tradition is its relationship with nature — not nature copied literally, but nature abstracted and idealised into something more perfect than the original. Symbolic Motifs: Meaning in Every Detail
Many of our designs incorporate motifs with deep symbolic resonance in the Islamic and Middle Eastern tradition. The pomegranate — a symbol of abundance, fertility, and paradise. The tulip — beloved in Ottoman art as a symbol of perfection and the divine. The cypress tree — a symbol of eternity and resilience.
We include these motifs not as decoration but as meaning — because we believe that the objects in our homes should carry stories, not just aesthetics. Our Pomegranate Dreams Wallpaper is a beautiful expression of this philosophy.
Colour: The Palette of Heritage
The colour palette of the Carta Noor collection is drawn from the great interiors of the Islamic world: the deep lapis of Persian tilework, the rich emerald of Andalusian gardens, the warm gold of Ottoman manuscripts, the cool ivory of carved stucco.
These are colours with depth and history — colours that have been refined over centuries to work together in harmony. For a more neutral approach, our Damask of the Dunes offers understated elegance, while the Astral Meridian Celestial Wallpaper brings a cosmic richness to any space.
Contemporary Craft
While our inspiration is historical, our production is entirely contemporary. Every Carta Noor design is printed on premium non-woven material using the latest digital printing technology, which allows us to reproduce the fine detail and rich colour of our heritage-inspired patterns with exceptional fidelity.
The result is a wallpaper that honours the past while being entirely suited to the present — beautiful, durable, and made for the contemporary home.
